This is a lid for a vase I purchased about 20 years ago from an antique shop in Tokyo. The lion tilting its head is very cute. According to the shop owner, it is a piece from the Yuan Dynasty in China. A memo attached at the time says: 青花釉裏紅開光花罐 (Qinghua Youlihong Kaiguang Hua Guan - Blue and white underglaze red openwork flower vase) See "Chinese Cultural Relics Essence Encyclopedia" page 340, figure 576. The glaze is Sumaliqing (苏麻离青 - Sumaliqing, a type of cobalt pigment). The color is different from the reproductions of Jingdezhen that occasionally appear at auction, and I believe the brushwork is also meticulous. The luster is firm and matte. I have cherished this as a member of my family for many years. This is a collector's item, so please refrain from price negotiations. I would like to pass it on to someone who will cherish it.
