This recording includes the Symphony No. 5, which boasts the most fulfilling content among them, and the final symphony, No. 7. Bernstein, with the Vienna Philharmonic, who became his renowned late-career collaborators, establishes a leisurely tempo as the foundation, while richly expressing phrases and carving out a performance with a sense of scale and dignity. This performance is distinctly imprinted with Bernstein's personality. A relaxed tempo, deep expression, and a dignified style... This performance reveals the new charm of Sibelius's music. It's a shame that the complete set with the Vienna Philharmonic was never completed. (Bernstein's Sibelius recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic in his later years include only Nos. 1, 2, 5, and 7.) The Symphony No. 7, though named a symphony, is a single-movement work of abstract and poetic extremes, and is particularly noteworthy. It's a difficult and obscure piece, but this performance provides a moment of fantasy. It has the power to draw the listener in. It is also the best performance for enjoying the comfort. The recording quality is also excellent. It is a masterpiece that rivals Karajan's. The Bernstein version has a purity, a gentle darkness, as well as grandeur and a thickness of sound, making for an incredibly satisfying listening experience.
