This is an Ouchi doll, a traditional craft of Yamaguchi Prefecture, in the form of Hina dolls (for the Doll Festival). The plump, round shape is very soothing. It is a lacquerware craft called Ouchi-nuri, and each piece is hand-painted by artisans with a brush.
