Kihachijo is a silk fabric based on three colors: yellow, reddish-brown, and black. The dyes are plant-based dyes from plants that grow naturally on the island. Yellow comes from Hachijo Kariasu (a type of grass), reddish-brown from the bark of Madami (a type of tabu tree), and black from the bark of a shiinoki (chinquapin) tree, dyed through soaking in a swamp. Mordants such as the ash of sakaki and camellia are used, and the use of alumina mordant creates vivid colors, producing a unique elegance and luster. It is characterized by its outstanding dyeing techniques, which are said to not fade even for generations to come.
