Since the kiln opened in the late Edo period, <Rokuemon-gama> has produced unique masterpieces in Gojozaka, Kyoto, through successive generations. This is "Naughty Oni and Shoki-san." Shoki is said to exorcise oni, who bring misfortune to humans, and ward off disasters. In the past, it is said that in Kyoto, people displayed tile-made Shoki figures on their roofs as a god to protect their homes from misfortune. "Although they are rarely seen now, there are still old houses in Higashiyama Ward, where <Rokuemon-gama> is located, and I occasionally see them," says the eighth-generation Kiyomizu Rokubei. "Shoki-san is said to be a god of warding off evil, but he is also a god of academic achievement. I thought it would be a problem if it was too scary to put as an ornament in the house, so I made it humorous," he says. The scene depicts Shoki capturing the mischievous oni. The oni, while being scolded by Shoki, look happy to be getting attention, which is very cute.
