Eiko Takayama, a talented up-and-coming singer (played by Mieko Takamine), learns the secret of her birth from her dying mother. Eiko's father was Takehiko Kawada (Ren'o Saito), one of the leading musicians of the day. With her mother's death as a catalyst, Eiko, accompanied by her brother's husband (Yokoyama), goes to Tokyo to realize her dream of becoming a vocalist. They settle in the Suzaku-so apartment in the downtown area. Eiko, filled with hope, visits her real father, Takehiko Kawada. However, against her wishes, Kawada stubbornly refuses to acknowledge her as his daughter. Her long-held dream shattered, Eiko returns to Suzaku-so, dejected. It was the good-natured composer, the enka singer, and the comedians who lived in the apartment who encouraged her.
