This is a vermilion lacquered square tray purchased about 20 years ago at Fukumitsuya in Takashimaya, Tamagawa. Fukumitsuya is a sake brewery representing Kaga, but they also had a discerning antique buyer who selected and permanently displayed items with good taste, such as tableware. I always enjoyed visiting there when I went shopping. Around New Year's, they would have a variety of items suitable for celebrating the new year, which always made me excited to browse. This tray was also an item I encountered when I happened to stop by at that time. I fell in love with its gentle and soft vermilion color at first sight. The size, 30cm square, is easy to handle, and the rounded corners are not overly formal, which I found pleasing. The gentle curve of the rising edge and the well-defined corners give a sense of the quality of lacquerware craftsmanship from 20-30 years ago. The thick foot (pedestal) shaped vermilion-lacquered parts on the corners are typical of the "square-footed tray" construction used by craftsmen at the time, and the single gold character [庄] in the center of the underside seems to be a common form for individual craftsman's marks. This construction is rarely seen in mass-produced synthetic resin lacquerware, and it has a soft luster and warmth unique to handmade items. It is an exceptionally beautiful item with almost no signs of use for a vermilion-lacquered tray. Therefore, I have classified it as a rare, beautiful item. The sturdy 5cm rise gives the tray a sense of dignity, and the construction of the underside feet also conveys the reliability of a craftsman's work. It possesses a gentle luster and presence not found in modern mass-produced items, and it is a vermilion-lacquered tray that quietly exudes elegance. Perfect for gatherings with friends, the Doll Festival, or New Year's celebrations, this tray inspires various wonderful images. It is a beautiful item with almost no signs of use. There are minor scratches from storage and small dents, but they are not noticeable unless you look closely. Please understand that this is not a new item, and I ask for purchases from those who appreciate older items. It seems that the distribution of "vermilion-lacquered trays in good condition" has drastically decreased in the current lacquerware market. The 30cm square size is the most popular and easiest to use as a single-person tray, a Japanese confectionery tray, or a serving tray. It complements both Japanese and Western tableware and adds a touch of elegance to your interior as a decorative tray. The actual item appears even more rounded and refined in appearance.
