There is no scratchiness, and the sound is fine (checked with an adapter; batteries not checked). The GAIN knob feels a bit stiff, which some people might find stressful. The screw that secures the battery box lid is missing, so it has been replaced with a different screw. My friend also hadn't used it much in the 30 years since he bought it, so I think it's in good condition. However, please consider that it is a used item and has been stored for a long time.
