This is a lidded suzuri (inkstone) with charming carvings of a bird (a Japanese bush warbler, perhaps?) and plum blossoms on the lid. The reddish-brown inkstone is of unknown origin. A sticker that says "Keito" is attached. The age is also unknown, but it is believed to be quite old. As it has a lid, it is convenient for temporarily storing ground ink.
