This is a black mourning fabric made of high-quality silk (Seiken) and Tango chirimen, dyed with traditional herbal methods. The fabric is held together with thread, so I haven't inspected the entire piece, but from what I can see, it's a very beautiful and wonderful item. It has a substantial amount of fabric, so it might even be enough for a haori (short coat). It has been carefully stored in my family's paulownia chest. My mother used to say that in the old days, they would lovingly give a set of mourning clothes to a daughter who was getting married, with the family crest of her new home embroidered on them.
