This is an ohitsu (wooden rice container) made from straight-grained, over 100-year-old Japanese cypress (sawara) wood harvested from the Kiso Valley. The wood is carefully selected by skilled craftsmen for its tight grain and dense texture. The fine-grained material is strong, water-resistant, and durable, with minimal shrinkage and expansion due to drying and wetting. Long-term home storage, new and unused. The underside of the lid is discolored with resin. The resin is a natural component of the wood and is completely harmless. Wiping the affected areas with vinegar or ethanol (rubbing alcohol) will remove the stickiness, but some yellow staining may remain. There are no problems with use, so please use it with confidence. Kiso sawara wood contains more resin than other types of wood, but wood with a high resin content is water-resistant and durable. Therefore, Kiso sawara wood is ideal for rice tubs and ohitsu.
