The dark areas of the pattern are all silver leaf, which has discolored over the long years. Based on the size and design of the pattern, it looks like a Ming Dynasty fabric imported from overseas, but because of the different weave, I believe it is Nishijin-ori from the Edo period. However, although it was likely made into a liturgical mat (uchishiki) around the end of the Edo period or the Meiji era, the fabric itself was probably woven much earlier. Generally, patterns become smaller as the era progresses. Of course, this is not for practical use, but is being offered as an antique fabric for appreciation.
