The B45 Lyre has a wider opening than the B40, which is generally known as a mouthpiece with a wider tip opening, but narrower than the 5JB jazz mouthpiece. It can be used in brass bands, of course, and also has a strong presence in big bands. Because of the wider opening, the tone is less likely to be distorted even with a soft reed, and it's easy to produce a well-defined sound even with less air. You might think it's too wide and difficult to play, but the balance is maintained by the rail width and facing, so it's surprisingly easy to play.
