Kiso-Hirasawa, designated as one of Japan's seven major lacquerware production areas and an Important Lacquer Craft Collective by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, is a town of lacquerware that consistently dominates the All Japan Lacquerware Exhibition, winning top prizes year after year. Akebi lacquerware is made by weaving young akebi vines and combining them with lacquered boards to create trays, serving dishes, and other items.
