I used this when my child was between 1 and 3 years old for going out. There are no noticeable scratches or stains, but there is some pencil marks on the inside. I think your child will be happy if you let them put their favorite toys, stuffed animals, drawing sets, etc. in it when they reach the age where they want to carry their own bag^^.
