Purchased approximately 25 years ago from an antique shop in Paris, France. This is a very old enamel fountain. It's a water tank & basin, one of the oldest types of French antique enamelware. It's a hand-painted piece from the Japy company, dating back to the early 1900s. It features beautiful roses and forget-me-nots, and is lovely. Small roses are also hand-painted on the basin. There are various Japy roses, but these are a slightly paler color and are beautiful. The white and pale green shading, along with the vibrant roses, creates a very chic look. The pale blue forget-me-nots in the background are delicate and charming. It doesn't feel overwhelming, and it's very natural and elegant. Fountains like these were used in the past, before running water, to store water in the upper tank and dispense it via a tap for washing hands indoors. I've never seen a French fountain of this age with a non-leaking tap, so it can't be used to hold water (as you can see in the photos, the tap is missing). However, these enamel pieces are becoming rare, so the French often display them on walls. It looks truly wonderful just as it is. You can combine it with greenery, dried flowers, lace, or use it for storage, as a towel rack, or to hold soap and other small items. It can become a very lovely antique depending on your ideas. The condition is as it was when purchased. It's old, so it has been used in French homes for many years. As you can see in the photos, there are some chips, scratches, and rust on the lower part of the main body and the drip tray, but there is no noticeable damage to the hand-painted part of the upper body, and it has a shine for an antique enamel piece, so it's in good condition. The green shading is also pale and calming. The inside is also in fairly good condition. The hook holes are intact, so it can be easily hung. There is no tap. There are no noticeable repaints or repairs, just the natural aging. Recommended for those who dislike repainting. It's a lovely, hand-painted Japy fountain with a gentle rose pattern, which is rarely found in France these days.
