From the age of 16 in 1955, he apprenticed under Yoshisuke Agatsuma of Sendai, learning woodturning. He completed his apprenticeship in 1963. He continued to work as a craftsman for Yoshisuke, but became independent in January 1975, producing Kokeshi dolls in Wakaba, Sendai City, and Kasumino, within the city.
