The [NSR250R], a street-legal production model, was developed based on the latest technology gained from the racing machine [NSR250], which was successful in those races. The first model was released in October 1986, but just one year and three months later, the 1988 model (commonly known as "Hachi-Hachi" or "88") was introduced, with a complete overhaul from the engine to the frame. The water-cooled 2-stroke V-twin engine was equipped with the world's first computer-controlled PGM carburetor for a production motorcycle, along with a PGM-CDI ignition system, a variable exhaust port valve system, and an oil pump, resulting in a revolutionary engine that comprehensively controlled everything from intake to ignition and exhaust. The frame also adopted an aluminum twin-tube frame using irregularly shaped pentagonal cross-section materials, and the cowl was designed in a racer-like style, sitting lower. The suspension featured wide-rim aluminum cast wheels, and radial tires were used in the rear.
