Antique linen Broderie Anglaise pieces purchased in Provence, Southern France. A tray cloth, square doily, and (wedding) handkerchief featuring white embroidery on open cutwork. It may be a British piece. A graceful and elegant work with delicate eyelets, like tiny water droplets, arranged along the stems and leaves, and hand-embroidered flowers in the four corners. 14 scallops on one side, 5 small petals/scallop within 1 frill/scallop, and hand-stitched frill embroidery. The corner petals have more, 7 scallops. Dot cutwork eyelet embroidery is rhythmically placed in groups of three, creating a fresh and refreshing impression as if water droplets are dancing. "BRODERIE ANGLAISE" is French for "English lace." It is said to have originated in 19th-century England, a type of embroidery lace made by cutting out the base fabric. It is decorated by embroidering and stitching eyelets and open cutwork, manipulating beautiful motifs to create the technique. It is made of slightly thin yarn and is somewhat thin. Supple, smooth, and soft, a smooth, high-quality linen weave. You can enjoy a cool feeling in the summer. The vertical and horizontal runs of the hand-spun and hand-woven threads are also very beautiful. The color is stone, a chic antique off-white like a subdued plaster. It has a mellow feel and is not too cool. (Images 16th to the last) Also, it looks like a tear or abrasion has been mended, and a four-petal flower has been appliqued on top. Cleaned at home in 2024.
