It pays homage to one of the methods by which the distorted sounds of early guitars and basses were created. When the fuzz setting is low, it reproduces a lo-fi, rough distortion sound, like the sound of a speaker cone being cut with a razor, a loose vacuum tube, or a malfunctioning channel on a recording console. On the other hand, if you crank up the fuzz, the sound changes completely.
