The six-syllable mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum) means "Oh, the jewel in the lotus, may you be eternal," referring to the six syllables of the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva's mantra. In Tibet, this mantra itself is considered to be one with Avalokiteshvara, and it is said that by chanting the mantra, one can ward off evil, escape from bad karma, accumulate fortune and virtue, prolong life, and increase wealth.
