This is a Wajima-nuri lidded soup bowl. It is a collaboration between Osaki Shoemon, a master craftsman of Wajima-nuri, and Chikuen Jiko (1892-1967), who painted the design. The result is an outstanding piece, thanks to the collaboration of these two masters. The only drawback is the staining inside the bowl. Considering the good condition of the exterior, it is presumed that this item was carefully handled while being used to serve guests. If there were no staining inside the bowl, it would be a considerably more expensive item. Even if you had the inside of the bowl repainted by a contemporary craftsman, it would still be reasonably priced. While one might hesitate to use such a valuable item, in this condition, you can use it without reservation. It would be perfect for use in a high-class restaurant or a small, traditional Japanese restaurant. It's such a fine piece that you could even have the inside repainted after using it for a while.
