The eldest son of Saigo Kichibei Takamori, a low-ranking feudal retainer of the Satsuma domain. His imina (personal name) was Takanaga at the time of genpuku (coming-of-age ceremony), later changed to Takeo and Takamori. His childhood name was Kokichi, and his common names were Kichinosuke, Zenbei, Kichibei, and Kichinosuke, changing in order. His pseudonym was Nanshu. Saigo Takamori has the same name as his father, but this is because his close friend Tomomi Yoshii mistakenly reported his father Kichibei's name when he was awarded a rank in the Charter Oath of Five Articles, and he has used his father's name ever since.
