This is a Tenmoku [cup & saucer] designed by Masatoshi Saeki, a ceramic artist selected as one of the "10 Designers of the World" by the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy, who passed away in 2019. This is a vintage piece from the late 1970s, no longer in production. It is said to have originated when monks who studied at the Zen temple on Mount Tianmu in Zhejiang Province, China, brought back black-glazed tea bowls for tea drinking when they returned to Japan during the Kamakura period. Later, this bowl shape was called Tenmoku chawan (tea bowl) and Tenmoku-gata (Tenmoku shape), regardless of the glaze, and black-glazed items were called Tenmoku, and the black glaze was called Tenmoku glaze, regardless of the shape of the vessel.
