Isshu Tsukamoto was a Kaga Maki-e artist, and this work is a superb piece of craftsmanship. The inside and bottom are also finished with nashiji (pear skin) lacquer, giving it a very luxurious feel. The scenery of Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka and the pine tree design can be used regardless of the season. It is a traditional design used since the Momoyama period, originating from court stories.
