This is a tea ceremony incense container (kogo) made of Ichii wood (Japanese yew) with a maple leaf design. While it has been used, it is in relatively good condition. Ichii wood is a very auspicious wood, named after the fact that it was once granted the highest rank, "Shoichii" (First Rank), to the Emperor. The wood grain is fine, and its gentle luster and warmth are its natural beauty. The soft feel and lightness when held in the hand are unique to Ichii wood. The maple leaf design on the lid quietly speaks of the changing seasons of autumn.
