It is a high-class "3-tiered food box with a stand" that utilizes the techniques of lacquer artists and chinkin (gold inlay) artisans. While general-purpose plates, individual plates, and teacups made by the late Kunimine Nishimura are still somewhat available, this food box with the "Hoso-ge" (a mythical flower) design carved in chinkoku (black inlay) on the four sides of the lid is considered very valuable. Wajima-nuri is created through approximately 23 processes and over 124 steps... The Hoso-ge in the carving design is an imaginary flower said to bloom in the Pure Land. It incorporates the beautiful elements of flowers such as peonies, rhododendrons, and hibiscus, and is said to represent the beautiful form of a Buddha who has reached enlightenment. While you often see peony and chrysanthemum carvings with chinshu (vermilion inlay) and chinkin, a food box with chinkoku Hoso-ge is rare. Chinkin uses gold powder in the carved areas, while chinkoku uses ink powder to create the pattern by inlaying it into the hand-carved design. It may be difficult to see in the overall photos, but please take a close look at the beautiful hand-carving technique. It takes an incredibly long time and a lot of manual labor.
