In 1966, he gained international attention as a printmaker, starting with the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale Printmaking Exhibition. He was called the "poet of form" and blossomed with multiple talents as a novelist and film director. In 1977, he received the Akutagawa Prize for his book "Dedicated to the Aegean Sea." His simple and warm personality was also loved by the media, and he appeared on television many times. In the NHK special "Masuo Ikeda: Mystery Document - The Enigmatic Painter Sharaku," he explored the character of Sharaku.
