This is a Kyō-nuri (Kyoto lacquerware) bowl. It's a piece with an elegant design typical of Kaiseki utensils, and the vermilion and scraped finish is very attractive. The vermilion lacquer has a beautiful color, but the wood grain also gives it a slightly brownish hue. It's in excellent condition, having only been stored.
