Description Jitoku Matsuno (松野 自得) 1890 (Meiji 23) - 1975 (Showa 50) Born in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. Studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts, under Suigun Komuro and others. Later, became a disciple of Tamon Yamauchi and studied landscape painting in earnest. Also studied calligraphy under Fusetsu Nakamura and researched the calligraphy of the Six Dynasties. Selected for the first Inten Exhibition and also active as a member of the Japan Nanga Academy. After the war, succeeded his stepfather and served as the chief priest of Saizen-ji Temple in Gunma Prefecture. Also had a deep knowledge of haiku, and served as the first chairman of the Gunma Prefecture Haiku Writers Association and as a director of the National Haiku Writers Association. A man of letters who mastered the three arts of painting, calligraphy, and haiku, his paintings and calligraphy are imbued with poetic sentiment and dignity.
