This is an actual octopus trap used in fishing. A rope was inserted through the hole in the bottom and tied on the inside to secure it. The fragile mouth of the trap has been reinforced with cement. While this detracts from its appearance, it was necessary for practical fishing use. Barnacle shells remain attached.
