This wooden statue depicts Jurōjin, also known as Jusei, the god of longevity from Chinese mythology. Jurōjin is believed to be an incarnation of the Canopus star and is revered as a god who bestows long life. He is often depicted with a very large head, a long beard, and accompanied by a deer. He typically holds a staff to which a scroll of longevity or a peach of immortality is tied. He is also counted as one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japan and is believed to bring longevity and happiness to people.
