His secular name was Satō Norikiyo. He is also written as Norikiyo, Sokiyo, and Norikiyo. Saigyō is his pen name, and his Buddhist name was En'i. Later, he was also called Daibonbō, Daihōbō, and Daihōbō. Approximately 2,300 of his waka poems are known.
