Thank you for viewing. Item No. 592 1️⃣ This is a "Matsushiro-yaki bowl" made in the mid-Edo period in Matsushiro, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture (formerly Matsushiro Town). It is a so-called antique folk craft item. This kind of Matsushiro-yaki from that era no longer exists today. The "Matsumoto Folk Craft Museum" displays Matsushiro-yaki jars and urns. 2️⃣ About 40 years ago, I stopped by an antique shop that I always visited on my way back from a business trip to Nagano City. It was located on the main street leading to Zenko-ji Temple, about 200 meters down from the temple, and immediately after turning left. It was a small, cozy shop. (The shop is no longer there.) 3️⃣ The shop's name was "Kashichi." It seems to be the name of the shop owner's father. There was a window on the left side of the shop, which was about 2 tsubo (approximately 6.6 square meters) in size, and some kind of pottery was always displayed there. Inside the shop, there was a table in the middle. The relatively young shop owner, in his 40s, was always sitting at the end. 4️⃣ On that day, only this bowl was placed in the window. Before entering the shop, my eyes were already glued to it. I was surprised, that there was such a "Matsushiro of the Edo period" itself. 5️⃣ Matsushiro-yaki is characterized by its green glaze. However, this bowl is significantly different from those currently being made. The depth of the green, the weight of the astringency, and the bold and interesting patterns of the glaze. It had all of those characteristics, and even just one of them was a shock to me. 6️⃣ I met the shop owner. "That's my favorite piece of Matsushiro-yaki." Without waiting for the shop owner's words, I had already decided that I would eventually take it home. The problem was the high price. "I'm sorry, but I'd like to give you 10,000 yen today and have you hold it for me." He kindly agreed to my request. 7️⃣ On top of a chest of drawers, or placed boldly on a table. You can also put flowers in it. Or, you could place it on a veranda or in a bay window.
