The spacing between the cords will be slightly larger depending on the needle size, but personally, I can use a 5mm one for 2.5mm needles without any problems. However, some people prefer the gaps to be as narrow as possible. This is a matter of preference, so please try it out and see what works for you. Conversely, using a size that is too tight may cause ladders (gaps) in your knitting. Personally, I have never had gaps with these row counters.
