This is a Daruma Daishi statue purchased from an antique shop in Tokyo. I was told it depicts him as he was departing from Southern India (Nantenjiku) for China. His face shows his determination as he faces a great mission. He is carrying water in a gourd on his back. Since he is setting off on a journey, he is wearing sandals instead of being barefoot. As he is barefoot in temples, looking at his feet gives a clue as to where he is. This Daruma Daishi ceramic statue in a traveling pose is very rare and unusual. There is a lot of damage, but miraculously, his face is undamaged. His right wrist and left ankle are reattached, and parts of his right thumb and little finger are missing. There are many repairs on the mantle, especially on the right side. The repairs use lacquer, glue, and various other materials. It seems he was cherished for many years.
