I have used it about 5 times since I purchased it, so there is some dirt associated with use, and there is a slight campfire smell, but as far as I could tell, there were no holes or tears. The back of the ground sheet is dirty, so I removed it to some extent, but grass, etc. is attached, so I think you should spread it out outdoors. The front side is only slightly dirty and has no tears.
