The birds depicted are peacocks and partridges. This refers to a long-pile rug woven by the nomadic "Qashqai" people, who live in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran and the highlands of the Fars province in the south. The Qashqai are not a single tribe, but a confederation of five groups (Qashquli, Sheshboluki, Darshuri, Amaleh, and Farsimadan). The rugs woven by the Darshuri often feature patterns of birds such as pheasants, and horses. Powerful depictions of lions and leopards are also characteristic. For nomadic people who travel through harsh environments such as mountains, beaches, and deserts, these rugs are convenient for moving, as bedding, and sometimes serve as covers to protect donkeys and chickens on cold nights.
