Influenced by his father, who was involved in the wholesale business of menswear, and his mother, who ran a boutique, Pierre grew up with a strong interest in clothing from a young age. After studying architecture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he turned to the fashion world, which had been his dream since childhood. After working at several maisons, he established "Pierre Balmain" in 1945, bearing his own name. After Pierre's death in 1982, designers such as Erik Mortensen and Oscar de la Renta took over.
