Hatsukaichi flourished as a post town on the Sanyo Road, and people who came to the town from the surrounding areas sought paper mache for children's toys, warding off evil, banquets, and festivals. It was also popular with children at temple and shrine festivals, and was famous as "Oshima's paper mache" and "Oshima's masks." The production technique has been passed down through the Oshima family of Hatsukaichi for generations, and in 1989, it was designated as an intangible cultural property of Hatsukaichi City.
