A Coalport teacup with a bird painting, estimated to be from 1891-1919. (Based on the backstamp. Please refer to the third to last photo.) The bird painting features exotic birds (imaginary, colorful birds). Exotic birds have been depicted since the early 1700s in Sèvres and Meissen. Coalport's painter, John Randall, imitated this and revived similar exotic birds with vibrant colors around 1845. (It is said that the Coalport manager purchased Sèvres porcelain at a high price and showed it to John Randall, saying, "This is genuine Sèvres. Paint such wonderful artwork," to which Randall replied, "This porcelain is the same as the work I painted long ago.") However, John Randall, who was also a mineralogist, began to paint realistic bird paintings around 1860, which are said to be breathtakingly beautiful, but I have yet to encounter such works. I collect teacups with bird paintings, but I rarely come across Coalport bird paintings. I think it's rare. The coloring of the birds in this painting is beautiful, and the birds are not awkward, I think it's quite good. The last two photos are of exotic birds said to be John Randall paintings, which were sold overseas. At the backstamp of the cup, fine crazing (cracks in the glaze) can be seen on the saucer. This is unavoidable with British pottery, but as this kind of exotic bird cup is rare, I would be happy if it could be passed on to someone who values it. I will list it for around the price I purchased it for. Thank you very much. #Coalport #Antique #Cup & Saucer
