The item I am offering for sale is a Wedgwood Columbia Powder Ruby cake/dessert plate, unused, black stamp, set of 2. ~Columbia Powder Series~ Columbia is characterized by two symmetrical griffins facing each other. Griffins are imaginary creatures that originated in the East, and entered Greece via Persia, Phoenicia, and Egypt. The Greeks believed that they lived in Scythia (northeast of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea) and guarded its gold. This design was created in the Victorian era, when Greek culture was passed on to Western Europe and artists were strongly influenced by medieval romanticism, combined with the style of heraldry that was in vogue. The powder finish (which was done by hand at the time) and the contrast of 22-karat gold on the vibrant ruby color create an extremely gorgeous design. (It was several times more expensive than the Ulander Powder at the time.)
