The Okiagari Koboshi, with its "seven falls, eight rises" philosophy, is a symbol of family safety and good health. It was customary to buy one more than the number of family members and display them on the household Shinto altar to celebrate the New Year. The Yamada Mingei Workshop, run by the fourth-generation Toshimasa Yamada and his son, the fifth-generation Kenji, is the only shop that still makes Okiagari Koboshi by hand using traditional methods. This piece is likely from the time of the third generation. The glue paint on the clay weight has peeled off, but please appreciate the expression of this old doll.
