The red and gray parts are due to the "sangiri" pattern, a unique feature of Bizen-yaki, which is created by color unevenness caused by temperature differences, such as ash covering the surface or intentionally applying charcoal during firing. It holds about 600ml when full, so even a large beer can will fit with room to spare.
