◾️About Zouaves Zouaves were French infantry units formed in 1831, primarily composed of Algerians and Tunisians. At the time, North Africa was a French colony. They were active as elite units in the French Army during World War I. They were disbanded in 1962 following the independence of North African colonies after World War II. The soldiers were characterized by their tattoos, beards, and jackets. Their uniform design was particularly influential, inspiring other armies. For example, they were adopted by the Papal States' army, known as the Papal Zouaves, and used as a force against the Italian unification movement. During the American Civil War, there were volunteer units in both the Union and Confederate armies that were called Zouaves. Zouave fashion was also adopted for civilian use, resulting in the creation of loose-fitting Zouave pants and Zouave jackets. ◾️Condition Repaired (see photo 7).
