Antique embroidered obi (sash). This is a luxurious piece with intricate embroidery on both sides of an ivory-colored, puffed weave fabric with gold threads woven in. The otaiko (back) pattern features peonies and chrysanthemums on one side, and cherry blossoms on the other. The pattern on the body of the obi includes chrysanthemums, peonies, and plum blossoms. The tare (hanging part) has a pattern of cherry blossoms only. The peony otaiko is a hiki-nuki (pulled-out) pattern, so I think the tare is common. It seems that knowledge and ingenuity are needed to tie it, but it would also be lovely as a collection piece or for display. There are some areas with dirt and stains on the base fabric. The embroidered areas are generally clean. It has a sense of age overall. It is very heavy. As it is old, please consider this if you like antiques and understand old items.
