It was serialized in the morning edition of the Asahi Shimbun from November 11, 1976, to January 24, 1979. It vividly portrays the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate, the anguish of the 15th shogun Yoshinobu, and the figures of Ryojun Matsumoto as a military doctor during the Boshin War, and Kansai Seki, a graduate of Juntendo. On the other hand, the novel depicts the figure of Inosuke Shimakura (later Ryokai Shiba), who, despite his exceptional memory and language acquisition skills, is disadvantaged by his poor ability to build relationships. This work views the period from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji Restoration not through politics, but from the perspective of medicine, and through that, critiques the class system. The cover design is by the Japanese painter Matazo Kayama. Both the main body and the obi show little yellowing due to age, and there are no stains, writing, or library stamps.
