Born in Joshin-ji Temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect in Shigaura Town, Nyu-gun, Fukui Prefecture (present-day Echizen Town, Nyu-gun). After graduating from the graduate school of Ryukoku University in 1922, he became a lecturer in the Faculty of Letters and then a professor in the Faculty of Letters in 1940. In 1946, he became a Kangaku (a high-ranking priest), and in 1949, he lectured on "Ojoronchu" at the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple's Ango (a period of intensive study), and on "Kyogyoshinsho" in 1963. In 1972, he became the head of the Kangakuryo and the president of the Shugakuin.
