Antique handmade (Irish) crochet and (also) tatting lace-style doily, purchased in America, dating from the late 1800s or around 1910-20. This flower-shaped round doily features delicate and graceful openwork flower patterns in varying shades, along with numerous picots. Beautiful, three-dimensional five-petal flower motifs alternate with openwork flowers, and the flower motifs, which appear to be tatting lace, are connected on the inside and outside. Three picot laces are added to the trefoil of the rim, and the piece is a meticulously crafted work filled with openwork motifs. The smooth center fabric is likely woven Irish linen. The tightly-knit, fine crochet chains and circles look like tatting lace. Each small circle is crocheted one by one, then connected and crocheted together with cotton thread. The color is elegant, graceful, and charming. It's a refined cream ivory, like vanilla milk ice cream, with a gentle yellow hue. The thread has a smooth, crisp feel with a firmness, and the fabric is smooth and supple. It has a beautiful tone and a captivating touch and texture that are rarely found in modern threads. I imagine it's high-quality cotton, but perhaps with a little linen mixed in...? With its natural colors and texture, it will feel refreshing in spring and summer, and will create a bright warmth in autumn and winter. Please forgive any errors due to amateur measurements below. Diameter: 24.7-24.2 cm Fabric diameter: 6.6 cm Approximately 15g There are no severe stains or damage such as tears, but upon close inspection, there are small red pinprick-sized spots, small pale pink-like stains, and light brown stains, as well as two areas where the fabric appears to have been repaired (see the last 5 images). I don't think they are very noticeable, but please consider this if you are interested. It has been cleaned and is in a clean condition. Suitable for chests, cabinets, entryways, and windowsills. A lovely and stylish crochet work. Possibly made in Ireland, England, Scotland, or Italy. The beautiful stitches and finish are so well done that it's difficult to tell which side is the front or back.
