In the late Edo period, on August 17, 1863, a group of rōnin (masterless samurai) of the Sonno Joi (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians) faction, including Toratarō Yoshimura, rose up in the Yamato region of Nara, with court noble Tadamitsu Nakayama as their leader. However, due to political changes in Kyoto, they were branded as rebels and were annihilated by the shogunate's forces. This was the Tenchūgumi Incident (Yamato Uprising), later called the precursor to the Meiji Restoration.
